EPS - Expanded Polystyrene EPS or Expanded Polystyrene is an insulation material used as the world-wide choice for building insulation due to a greater awareness of, especially global warming. When planning your future home, office or commercial building, the increase in building costs and rising energy costs surely plays a huge roll. With any building structure, there are 3 components to take into account for effective insulation – the floor, walls and roof. Understanding the benefits of EPS can hugely assist in your decision making:

Wall – why insulate your walls

• The floor can be accountable for up to 30% of a building’s insulation property. It is therefore important to understand that insulating the floor is as important as other components of the building structure.
• THE EPS is usually installed on top of the initial slab, on top of the waterproofing. The screed is then poured on top of the insulation.
• The floor slab cools down – especially at night. Underfloor heating systems are sometimes used to heat up floor areas. Without EPS floor insulation, the use of underfloor heating systems will lead to extended working time because of the cold slab / screed. Using EPS insulation will result in lowering energy consumption and hence electricity costs.
• Without underfloor heating systems the EPS insulation will greatly reduce the influence of temperature variations from the slab.
• EPS is also used in the construction of 1 st floor slabs to achieve weight reduction without compromising strength.
• Building plans, architectural or engineering requirements normally specify the density and thickness required. Because of the weight that the EPS board needs to carry, the 15DV density is not sufficient. 20DV and 24DV is mostly used and in some cases the 32DV is required. Please refer to our guidelines to determine your need.

• The roof can be accountable for up to 35% of a building’s insulation property.
• Both flat and pitched roof structures can be insulated using EPS.

Other uses for EPS include:

• Building of cold rooms / refrigeration

Guidelines

EPS are supplied in the form of sheets/blocks and in different densities. The following table indicates the available sheet sizes:

The combination of the two elements (density and thickness) determine the R-value ( a measure of the thermal resistance of the material). Specific R-value requirements can be met by varying the density and increasing/decreasing the thickness. In most engineering projects the R-value determined by building regulations forms a guideline to:
1. Ensure the correct strength as per the application
2. Ensure effective insulation
3. Ensure the most cost effective product
